Wheaton Beats Northwood, Ends 3 year Drought in Softball

That’s not a type-o.  It’s been 3 years since the Wheaton Knights have had a victory in softball.  On Saturday, April 5th, it came at the expense of the Northwood Gladiators, 20-19.  The day was cold and windy, not ideal for softball.  Both softball and baseball have struggled across Montgomery County this season just to get games in due to either rain or snow or poor field conditions even when sunny.   The Spring season began for Wheaton's Head Coach Lauren Vorisek's Knights on March 25th, and six games should be under the teams belt by now, but the game Saturday was only the 2nd so far.  The Knights improve to 1-1 on the young season while Northwood dropped to 0-3.  Wheaton's victory was a "come from behind" win.  The Knights trailed by 2 runs going into the 7th inning.  Wheaton senior pitcher, Danielle MacKenzie (4 SO's, 3 walks) who had played the complete game, made a sliding catch of an infield pop-up to retire the side.  The Knights batters came through tying the game in the bottom of the 7th, 19-19.  The Knight s proceeded to load the bases.  Wheaton Junior, 3rd Base, Athanasia Tsimbidis (2 RBI’s), hit a line drive into center field to score the winning run.  Wheaton’s scoring was lead by Junior, Shortstop, Jessica Hernandez (4 runs/1 RBI) and Sophomore, Left Fielder, Helen Daniel (3 Runs/3 RBI’s).  Today’s (Monday) game between Wheaton and Einstein is once again rained out.  They will next travel to Watkins Mill HS, Wednesday, April 9th, to take on the Wolverines at 3:30pm.
