3 Massachusetts Hotels Named Among America's 'Most Haunted'
These hotels paranormal legacies date back centuries.
Massachusetts travelers looking for a Halloween getaway with a little more baggage than they packed may find it at one of the country’s most famously haunted historic hotels.
Spanning decades or even centuries, the 25 properties featured on Historic Hotels of America’s Most Haunted Hotels list, released Tuesday, have built quite a collection of supernatural tales.
Both visitors and staff have encountered uncanny phenomena — from unexplainable cold spots and self-moving objects to ghostly sightings and phantom footsteps. To uncover who or what might be lingering in the rooms, a few locations have even hosted paranormal researchers.

Selections for the list were determined by the endurance of each hotel’s spooky legends and how eagerly they embrace them through Halloween specials, ghost tours, and themed packages.

In Massachusetts, hotels that made the list are:
- The Red Lion Inn, Stockbridge:
The Red Lion Inn has developed a reputation as one of the Berkshires’ haunted destinations, with guests and employees reporting unexplained activity throughout the 250-year-old hotel. The fourth floor and Guestroom 301 are said to be paranormal hotspots, with reports of unexplained knocks, cold spots and sightings of a young girl carrying flowers and a man wearing a top hat. The inn, which dates back to 1773, was also featured in Robert Oakes’ book, “Ghosts of the Berkshires.”
- Omni Parker House, Boston:
The Omni Parker House has developed its own ghost lore, with guests and employees reporting unexplained activity throughout the hotel. Founder Harvey Parker, who died in 1884, is said to appear on the upper floors, while visitors have also reported unexplained voices, phantom cigar smoke and elevators stopping without being called. Some of the stories have also been linked to former guests Charles Dickens and Charlotte Cushman.
- Hawthorne Hotel, Salem:
The Hawthorne Hotel has developed a reputation for paranormal activity, with guests reporting unexplained noises, moving furniture and ghostly sightings throughout the century-old hotel. Room 325 is said to be among its most haunted spots, where guests have reported cold spots and the smell of fresh-cut flowers, while others have claimed to see a ghostly woman roaming the sixth floor. The hotel opened in 1925 and was investigated by the paranormal television show “Ghost Hunters” in 2007.
