The first five months of 2026 have seen mounting job losses across Massachusetts as major companies close stores and some banks close branches.
Through May 31, there have been 5,504 layoffs announced, according to WARN notices filed with the state Department of Labor.
The Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act, or WARN, requires employers with 100 or more employees to provide 60 days' advance written notice of plant closings or mass layoffs.

In addition, another Bay State health care company that previously announced 78 layoffs, Community Healthlink, said that number had increased to 84 cuts planned by July 6.
The unemployment rate in April is 4.7 percent — slightly higher than the 4.3 percent nationwide.
