The summer's nearly over and the days are going to get shorter — and colder. So here are some tips for cutting energy costs as winter approaches in Massachusetts.
Mass Save, a collaborative between Berkshire Gas, Cape Light Compact, Eversource, Liberty, National Grid and Unitil, recommends making sure the fireplace flue is closed and that a residence is properly insulated.
"Placing draft stoppers at the base of doors is a simple, effective way to prevent warm air from escaping and cold air from seeping in," Mass Save points out. "They're available in a wide range of styles at home improvement stores."
Mass Save also warned against blocking radiators or heat vents with with furniture.
Upgrading your thermostat can also make a difference.
"Smart and programmable thermostats make it easy to control your home's temperature and your energy use even when you're not at home," according to Mass Save. "These devices can learn your habits, adjust automatically to changing weather, and be monitored or controlled remotely via your smartphone, tablet, or computer."
As far as saving on the electric bill, Mass Save suggested avoiding "third party" or "competitive" electricity supply companies and employing a a municipal aggregation plan if available.
If you heat your home with oil or propane, consider switching, Mass Save advised.
"These fuels fluctuate in price based on external factors like global markets, supply chain disruptions, and seasonal demand," according to Mass Save. "Households that heat with oil or propane generally have more expensive heating bills than those using heat pumps or natural gas."
