CHELSEA, MA — Popular brands of several meat and poultry products — including Fenway Franks, Kayem bacon and kielbasa and al fresco chicken sausage — were off store shelves this week after the Chelsea-based Kayem Foods Inc. recalled more than 1.5 million pounds of meat that may have been stored at improper temperatures.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service said the pre-cooked meat and poultry products were produced between March 31 and Oct. 7.
The products in question were distributed from the Chelsea location. A full list of the products and UPC codes can be found here.
The products had USDA inspection marks of "EST. M/P 7839," "EST. P 20935A" and "EST. M 9520." These items were shipped to retail and foodservice locations nationwide and Hong Kong.
The USDA said the problem was discovered after Kayem received a retail customer complaint regarding warm product temperatures upon delivery on Oct. 1.
The USDA said Kayem investigated and determined that they stored various ready-to-eat meat and poultry products in a warehouse cooler that experienced temperature deviations.
The USDA said there have been no confirmed reports of illness due to consumption of these products.
Anyone concerned about an illness should contact a healthcare provider.
Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.
