MASSACHUSETTS — A dozen GameStop stores in Massachusetts appear to have closed in the last month as the company is silently shuttering stores nationwide due to reportedly poor sales.

It leaves the Bay State with 28 remaining locations, according to GameStop's website.

The retailer, which dates back to 1980, at one time had over 6,000 stores worldwide and about $9 billion in annual sales. But its numbers have dwindled in recent years and now only about 2,960 stores are located in the United States, according to data collection company ScrapeHero.

GameStop has not released an official list of which stores are closing, or commented on store closures. But customers have been reporting closures across the country.

GameStop's website lists the following 12 stores in Massachusetts as "closed" every day of the week. All the locations are also listed on the unofficial blog "GameStop Closing List" for January 2025:

A reporter's calls to each of the stores during normal business hours were met with the same message: "Thanks for calling GameStop. All sales associates are assisting other customers. Please call back in a few minutes."

In 2023, the company closed 287 stores. The new wave of closures, which also appears to number in the hundreds, "reflects GameStop’s losses as it struggles to adapt to a changing market following a shift towards digital downloads and game streaming," according to TimeOut.
