MA Christmas 2021 Grocery Store Hours: Wegmans, Shaw's, Walmart

MASSACHUSETTS — Trying to find a grocery store open in Massachusetts on Christmas? You'll be better off just driving to another state.

Due to the state's blue laws, grocery stores (and liquor stores) won't be allowed to open on Christmas Day. That means no running out for a deal at Aldi, a can of gravy at Stop & Shop or a nice piece of cheese from Wegmans. Many of those stores will be closed nationwide on Christmas Day, anyway.

In fact, the state Department of Labor Standards in 2021 has taken the extra step of not issuing special permits for grocery stores to open on Christmas. Sometimes, local retailers can get a waiver to remain open on Christmas and Thanksgiving, but not this year.

There are some exceptions to the blue laws — 55 of them in fact. Restaurants, pharmacies and hotels are three types of business that can remain open on Christmas if they choose. You might also be able to hop over to Connecticut on Christmas Day because state laws are looser around grocery stores there.

With those restrictions in mind, here are a few retailers with limited grocery items that may be open on either Christmas Eve or Christmas Day in Massachusetts:

Aldi: Stores will be open Christmas Eve, but hours will vary by location; closed on Christmas Day.

BJ’s Wholesale Club: Stores will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Christmas Eve and will be closed on Christmas Day.

Costco: Some stores will be open for limited hours on Christmas Eve, and all stores will be closed Christmas Day. Call ahead to confirm hours with your local store.

CVS: Many locations, including those open 24 hours, will be open regular hours on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day; however, some pharmacies may have reduced hours or be closed for the holiday. Customers are encouraged to call ahead to confirm hours at their preferred locations.

Market Basket: Most locations in Massachusetts will be open on Christmas Eve during regular hours.

Rite Aid: Most locations will be open Christmas Eve, and select stores will be open Christmas Day; however, hours will vary. Call ahead to confirm hours.

Sam’s Club: Stores will be open until 6 p.m. Christmas Eve and will be closed on Christmas Day.

Shaw’s and Star Market: Stores will be open but close at 6 p.m. on Christmas Eve and remain closed on Christmas Day.

ShopRite: Hours will vary by location. Call ahead to your local store to confirm hours.

Stop & Shop: Stores in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York and New Jersey will close at 6 p.m. Christmas Eve. All stores will be closed on Christmas Day.

Target: Most stores will close at 8 p.m. Christmas Eve. All stores are closed Christmas Day.

Trader Joe’s: All stores will close at 6 p.m. Christmas Eve. Stores are closed Christmas Day.

Walgreens: Walgreens stores will be open during regular business hours on Christmas Eve. Pharmacy hours vary by location. On Christmas Day, most Walgreens stores will be open from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Twenty-four-hour Walgreens locations and 24-hour pharmacies will remain open.

Walmart: Stores will be open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Christmas Eve. All stores are closed Christmas Day.

Wegmans: All Wegmans locations will close at 6 p.m. on Christmas Eve and remain closed through Christmas Day.

Whole Foods: Stores will be open on Christmas Eve, but hours will vary by location. Call ahead to your preferred store to confirm hours. All stores are closed Christmas Day.
