MASSACHUSETTS — Soon, you won't have to make an appointment for a key piece of automobile business.

The state Registry of Motor Vehicles on Sept. 26 will begin offering walk-in service for registering vehicles or transferring a registration to a new car. The RMV will still allow drivers to register for appointments online for learner’s permits, driver’s licenses and identification cards.

“The RMV continues to monitor its customer service levels and make enhancements that seek to provide convenient and flexible options for customers,” Registrar of Motor Vehicles Colleen Ogilvie said in a recent news release.

During the pandemic, the RMV required appointments for all in-person transactions. When Gov Charlie Baker ended the COVID-19 state of emergency in June 2021, the RMV elected to keep many pandemic-era practices in place — including appointments for registrations.

If you already have an appointment for a registration after Sept. 26, the state will still honor it, according to officials.
