MA Storm Timing: 24 Hours Of Wind, Torrential Rain, Temperature Swings

This storm will bring everything but snow to Massachusetts, including a huge change in temperatures.

MASSACHUSETTS — A serious winter storm will arrive in Massachusetts Thursday afternoon, packing just about every form of weather except measurable snow.

The storm will be nasty in every corner of the state, from minor snow in the Berkshires to possible coastal flooding from Newburyport to Provincetown. The storm will also bring unseasonably warm temperatures in the 50s to the state on Friday.

But the warm-up will be brief. Temperatures will drop rapidly by Friday night back into the 30s. Areas in Worcester County could see a temperature swing of around 36 degrees between noontime Friday and early Saturday morning, according to forecasts.

Here's what to expect over the next 24 hours with the storm, according to the National Weather Service:

Thursday afternoon - Light to moderate rain begins with snow mixed in at higher elevations.

Thursday night - Rain begins to increase in intensity. Slippery travel in western Massachusetts with more snow likely.

Overnight Thursday - The most intense weather will happen late Thursday night into early Friday morning: destructive wind gusts and torrential rain.

Friday morning - Torrential rain will continue into late morning. Flooding possible along the coast coinciding with high tide. Temperatures will move into the 50s.

Friday night - Temperatures will drop rapidly, swinging as much as 35 degrees in some places. Strong, gusty winds will continue with subzero wind chills.
