Nearly 50 Guinea Pigs Found Abandoned In Poor Condition On MA Trail

DRACUT, MA — Police are seeking the public's help in finding the person responsible for leaving 49 guinea pigs near a brook in Dracut, Massachusetts Monday.

The animals, who "all appeared lethargic and in poor condition," were found on a small trail near Beaver Brook off Lakeview Avenue around 12:30 p.m., police said.

They were taken to receive care from a veterinatian at Lowell Humane Society, where they remain today, according to police. The guinea pigs are not immediately available for adoption because of their health.

"It was evident that the guinea pigs had been intentionally disposed of in a location where they had no means to fend for themselves or escape their dire situation," Dracut Animal Control officer Colleen Morse said. "Given the abundance of resources available for the care and rehoming of animals, such neglect and abandonment are unacceptable. This situation indicates a serious lapse in responsibility and compassion."
