MASSACHUSETTS — There will be an unwanted guest at New Year's Eve festivities across Massachusetts this weekend: heavy rain.

Delightfully warm weather over the New Year's weekend will be tempered by rain, heavy at times, right during the peak of new year celebrations, according to the National Weather Service. There's a 100 percent chance of rain between 6 p.m. and midnight across all parts of the state.

"First half of Saturday will feature increasing cloudiness and mild temperatures in the 50s. By mid to late afternoon, a modest short-wave trough advancing from the Midwest will support a period of wet weather through Sunday morning," the weather service said in a Friday forecast. "While forcing with this system is modest, there will be an abnormally high amount of moisture in the atmosphere to support substantial precipitation, especially over the southeastern areas."
