To win the big one, players need to match five numbers plus the Powerball number.
To win $1 million, players need to match five numbers. For a $50,000 prize, players need to match four numbers plus the Powerball number.
The odds of winning the jackpot are, as you might expect, slim. Going into Monday's drawing, the odds were about 1 in 292.2 million.
Before Monday's drawing, the jackpot was the ninth-largest lottery prize of all time. It’s the second-largest jackpot this year, and the fourth-largest in the history of the game.
And the actual grand prize isn't quite the advertised top number as the $1.2 billion is subject to tax. Still, it's nothing to sneeze at with an estimated cash value of $551.7 million, according to Mass Lottery.
Powerball tickets are $2 per play. Tickets are sold in 45 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
More than half of all proceeds from the sale of a Powerball ticket remain in the jurisdiction where the ticket was sold.
