MASSACHUSETTS — A deadly hurricane that just a day ago was battering Florida with high winds and floodwaters will wash up in New England this weekend as just a rainstorm.

The remnants of Hurricane Ian may appear Saturday in the region as rainfall, according to forecasts. The storm is breaking apart is it moves northward out of the Carolinas, with one part of Ian bringing rain into the Ohio Valley, and another part moving out over the Atlantic.

In Massachusetts, the chance of rain will be highest around Buzzard's Bay and the islands. Inland areas may not see anything — for example, there's only about a 40 percent chance of rain in Worcester Saturday, according to the National Weather Service.

"Latest guidance suggests that the steady rain will be focused south of the MA Turnpike Sat. Perhaps a period of spotty lighter showers in northern MA. Still need to fine tune things, but a tight gradient expected on the northern edge of the main rain shield," the National Weather Service tweeted Friday.

By very early Sunday morning, the remnants of Ian will be out over the Atlantic on a northeasterly course, according to forecasts.

Ian blazed through Florida after traveling over very warm water in the Gulf of Mexico. The storm dissipated as it moved over land, strengthened again when it hit the Atlantic, and then began to break up when it moved back over land.
