A Florida company has issued a voluntary recall of its smoked salmon due to a pathogen that's especially dangerous for vulnerable people.

MASSACHUSETTS — A Florida company is voluntarily recalling smoked salmon sold in Massachusetts due to possible listeria contamination, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The St. James Scotch Reserve Scottish Smoked Salmon was sold in 10 states, including Massachusetts, between February and June. Food inspectors in Washington state discovered the potential contamination during a random sampling of the product.

About 93 cases of the smoked salmon product were sold before the contamination was discovered.

The potentially contaminated items were sold in 4-ounce packages bearing the lot No. 123172 and the UPC code 060022710356. Consumers should either throw away the possibly contaminated salmon or return it to the store for a refund, the FDA advised.

Although no illnesses had been reported as of Friday, listeria is a potentially serious sickness, especially for at-risk people like children, the elderly and people with compromised immune systems. Listeria can cause flu-like symptoms, plus diarrhea and muscle stiffness.
