Mount Auburn Cemetery was inspired by English landscaping tradition as well as Paris’s parklike Père Lachaise. It opened in 1831 as the nation's first "garden cemetery," and still welcomes the public to its 175 acres of grounds in Cambridge and Watertown every day, according to Yankee Magazine.
