VIDEO: Acton's Hard Drive Recycle Program

Head to the transfer station and recycle your used hard drives and cellphones for $10. No permit needed.

As recent as this Tuesday, the has been operating a new recycling program for hard drives. For the price of $10, you can bring your hard drives and destroy them at the station, which are later brought to a hard drive recycle station in Nassau, N.H.

Acton's Highway Superintendant Russell Robinson, who was a driving force for the implementation of this recycle program, warns of the risk you run falling victim to identity theft by just throwing away your old hard drives and cellphones. By recycling them at the station, they will be destroyed in front of your eyes into shards of metal and brought to a hard drive recycle station.

Read an Acton Patch blog post from about this: "Before you toss out that old computer, and the Town of Acton makes this easy to do at the Town's Transfer Station, think about the data that might still be on your hard drive, and if you have the least amount of concern about this, as I think most of us do or should, ."
