ANDOVER, MA — Andover residents looking to clear out Halloween pumpkins will have a new local option this week.
The town's Sustainability Department is partnering with Black Earth Compost to host Andover's first Pumpkin Smash on Tuesday at the Rec Park parking lot on Abbot Street.
The event is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and is open to residents bringing their used Halloween pumpkins. Residents will have a chance to smash the pumpkins before they are collected by Black Earth Compost.
The pumpkins will then be turned into a nutrient-rich compost.
Candles, glitter and paint should be removed before pumpkins are brought to the event.
For residents who still have jack-o'-lanterns sitting on porches or steps after Halloween, the event offers a way to dispose of them locally rather than throwing them away.
