LAKEVILLE, Mass. June 25, 2012—Jared Newman, a rising sophomore at Phillips Academy Andover, was appointed to The Marble Collection’s [TMC] Student Advisory Board in March for his dedication to the revival of the arts in the Massachusetts high school community.
The Student Advisory Board, comprised of dedicated high school students from across the state, is committed to enabling The Marble Collection to achieve its mission, realize its potential and fulfill its obligations to supporters and partners. Members work towards the advancement of The Marble Collection: Massachusetts High School Magazine of the Arts—the only statewide print and digital magazine of the arts for and by Massachusetts youth.

Newman, who is also the editor of Andover’s literary magazine, Courant, sees TMC as a way to bring art to the masses: “I view my devotion to the cause TMC fights for as a way of allowing artists of every capacity across the state to allow others to create art. It's a network connecting people from all backgrounds to create a grander art.”

While never published in TMC, Newman has quite a list of creative accomplishments, including working with poets Sapphire, Marie Ponsot, and Sherman Alexie as well as having his poetry published. TMC has brought new inspiration to his craft. “TMC not only has become a creative outlet and catalyst for my poetry but has deepened my understanding of the creative world.” He credits the behind-the-scenes look at the publishing business that TMC’s Student Advisory Board provides for giving him a fuller experience of the creative process. “Serving on the Student Advisory Board has shown me the inner-workings of public and press communication, invention and execution of plans, and of course editing and layout.”
After graduating from college, Newman plans to either pursue a Master’s of Fine Arts in Creative Writing or enter the political sphere. Jared realizes that these two careers may be seen as conflicting, but he credits TMC with giving him new perspective.“TMC helped me understand that art can come from anywhere, expected or unexpected, from middle and high schools across the state, and yes even from politicians developing and executing plans.”

TMC was founded in 2008 to enrich the Massachusetts high school community through educational literary and creative arts programming. The Marble Collection: Massachusetts High School Magazine of the Arts weaves the arts back into the fabric of our community, whereas TMC’s Student-Mentoring Workshop [SMW] provides students with one-to-one tutoring services to edit and critique their work before publication.
