Andover Fire Chief: Call 911 For Gas Leaks

Columbia Gas of Massachusetts had not been notifying Merrimack Valley fire departments about gas leak reports.

ANDOVER, MA -- Andover Fire Chief Mike Mansfield is urging residents in Andover, North ANdover and Lawrence to report suspected gas leaks to their local fire departments by calling 911. Columbia Gas of Massachusetts had been responding to the calls without notifying local fire departments. While state law does not require the utility to report the incidents to local officials, Mansfield said local fire departments are better equipped to respond to the incidents.

"We felt that given what has gone on since Sept. 13, we should all be responding," Mansfield told the Eagle-Tribune, which first reported this story. "We requested that they notify us about each and every call they get on their emergency lines."
