Andover To Host MBTA Communities Housing Conversation
The town is evaluating how to comply with a state law passed in 2021 requiring multi-family housing in communities with MBTA service.
ANDOVER, MA — The Town of Andover is inviting residents to an upcoming meeting on how the town can comply with the MBTA Communities law.
Passed in 2021, the zoning law "requires communities that host MBTA service...create at least one district in which multi-family housing is permitted as of right, meaning that development within the district may take place without the need for a special permit or other discretionary approval," according to the town.
The legislation is intended to address the state's housing shortage and lack of adequate options for young families, workers, and aging residents. The emphasis on public transit is intended to create walkable neighborhoods close to frequently visited destinations, such as shops, schools, restaurants, and parks.
