Gillette Charts Expansion Of Andover Campus Into Manufacturing Center

Manufacturing giant Proctor & Gamble Gillette announced it will move its production facilities from Boston to Andover.

ANDOVER, MA — Proctor & Gamble Gillette plans to move its production facilities from Boston to Andover. The company said it plans to turn the 30 Burtt Road facility in Andover into a "21st century manufacturing center that is more sustainable, agile and efficient with some of the best equipment and capabilities in the world."

The company said it will offer all current South Boston manufacturing employees a role at the Andover plant.

The transition will occur in phases with the first employees beginning to transfer locations in about two to three years. The company said it will assist employees in navigating the additional 23-mile commute to Andover.

"This new Andover Manufacturing Center will serve as a critical U.S. manufacturing hub for P&G’s Gillette Business Unit supporting its blade & razor, aerosol and chemistry manufacturing lines, packaging operations and direct-to-consumer operations," according to a statement. "The enhanced site is also expected to be an attractive option for other P&G businesses in the future. P&G Beauty has already confirmed plans to double production of its Bar Soap in Andover in the next two years. P&G Beauty has also begun an assessment that could bring additional categories to Andover in the future."

Proctor & Gamble Gillette also announced that it plans to build a global headquarters in South Boston. About 750 corporate employees will work at the new location.

The company said the new headquarters "reflects a renewed investment in Boston," and the combined Andover and Boston plans account for Gillette's largest-ever investment in Massachusetts.

“This is a critical moment for our business to ensure that we have the right infrastructure and capabilities to win for the next century,” Gary Coombe, CEO P&G Grooming said in a statement. “I’m confident that we’ve reached the right conclusion and I’m glad that we will continue to have a meaningful presence in both communities – including Boston, which has been our home for over a century and offers so much in terms innovation, talent, education, and culture. This will undoubtedly be an advantage for us in the future.”
