Lawrence Gas Line Break: Hundreds Of Homes Evacuated

Nearly 2,000 are without power, including hospitals, after an 8-inch line was ruptured during excavation.

LAWRENCE, MA — More than 100 have been evacuated after a gas line ruptured Thursday afternoon during excavation on a Lawrence construction site. Nearly 3,000 power are without power, including at hospitals and nursing homes, according to Boston 25.

No injuries have been reported.

Police said break took place in 8-inch gas line on Jackson Street near the Methuen line. Electrical power and gas has been shut off in the neighborhood.

The Lawrence Senior Center has been set up as an emergency shelter.

Jackson Street is detoured between Park Street and Berkeley, and it's closed between Berkeley and Swan. In Methuen, Swan Street is closed between Jackson and Prospect streets. Methuen fire officials said it's unknown how long the street will be closed.
