Obituary: Walter P. Hughes, Owned Academy Manor in Andover, known as Hughes House
WWII Navy Veteran

Obituary from Burke-Magliozzi Funeral Home.
Walter P. Hughes, a 50 year resident of Andover and beloved husband of 64 years to Frances A. (SantaMaria) Hughes, died at the Lawrence General Hospital surrounded by his devoted family on Sunday, November 2, 2014. He was 89 years old.
Born in Boston, on May 25, 1925, he was the beloved son of the late George and Mary J. (Cadegan) Hughes. He was raised in Dorchester along with his 2 brothers and 4 sisters, including his twin, Marie. He was a WWII Navy veteran, entering the military on March 4, 1943 at Boston and receiving his honorable discharge on April 14, 1946. Walter was a graduate from Dorchester High School and had attended Suffolk University. He spent much of his career building nursing homes and owning one, Academy Manor in Andover formally known as Hughes House. He would say that he “retired” to the IRS where he continued to work for over 20 years until he was 85 years old. In his spare time, Walter enjoyed caring for his beloved horses and watching sports, especially when his grandsons were playing them. His sense of humor was noted by all who were fortunate enough to have known him. He will be dearly missed is an understatement.
