Police Investigating Manhole Cover Thefts

According to police roughly 30 manhole covers were stolen from around Andover in recent weeks.

You may want to watch the road a little more carefully when you're driving through Andover. Andover police say thieves have been stealing manhole covers and catch basin grates in various locations throughout town in the past week or two. 

Andover Police Lt. William Oulette said that there have been manhole cover or catch basin thefts in 8 to 10 locations throughout town. Wilmington is also experiencing these thefts and the towns are working together to investigate the situation.

Wilmington investigators said that 10 manhole covers have been stolen in their town, opposed to the roughly 30 stolen in Andover. Costing roughly $200 each, the missing roadway covers can add up quickly.

Police said that the parties responsible are likely using a hook so they are able to lift them from the street, load them into their waiting vehicle, and leave the scene in less than a minute.

According to Wilmington Police Lt. Brian Pupa, the parties involved are likely bringing the covers to Everett where they are scrapped in exchange for money.

Andover Highway Superintendent Chris Cronin was not immediately available for comment.

Police have reported missing manhole covers or catch basins grates in various locations around town including Montclair Avenue, Minuteman Road, Bateson Drive, Tewksbury Street and Yardely Road.
