Average Teacher Salaries For MA School Districts: State Numbers

Teacher salaries are always a hot topic. How much do we pay the people who help educate our children? According to national and state data, teachers in Massachusetts do much better than they do in most of the country. Scroll down to see district-by-district numbers.

The average Massachusetts teacher salary in 2016-17 was $78,100, according to the National Education Association. That was the third-highest average salary for any state in America, trailing only first-place New York and California. The average teacher salary in America was $59,660 - in last-place Mississippi it was less than $43,000 a year.

The state education department said Massachusetts teachers made $5,320,279,645 that year. Spread across the state's 67,696 teachers, that averages out to $78,591. It's an increase from last year's $76,756, and a far cry from the 2009 average salary of $67,572.

Five Massachusetts school districts paid their teachers an average of $100,000 or more, led by Burlington at $101,854. Brookline was a close second at $101,413, and employed nearly double the amount of teachers.

Boston's average teacher salary for the nearly 4,000 teachers it employed was $99,358, good for seventh highest in the state.

Tiny districts in Western Mass. populated much of the very bottom of the list.

The Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education numbers "include classroom and specialist teacher professional salaries, and professional salaries attributed to professional development days," the department said.

The amount of teachers includes full-time equivalents published to the school/district profiles found here, as well as "teachers on leave" reported in EPIMS, and postsecondary teacher full-time equivalents reported to the CVTE office.

Some districts did not have final numbers available.
