Temple Emanuel of Andover Speakers Series to Address Hate in America

Temple Emanuel of Andover’s Social Action-Social Justice Committee will continue their speaker series on Sunday, October 15 with a presentation from Richard Cohen, formerly of the Southern Poverty Law Center, who will discuss Hate in America: Why It’s Getting Worse and What Can Be Done about It. All are welcome to attend in person from 4:00 – 6:00 pm at Temple Emanuel, 7 Haggetts Pond Road, Andover, MA or via Zoom. The Southern Poverty Law Center is an organization dedicated to fighting hate, teaching tolerance, and seeking justice for the most marginalized members of society. Richard Cohen served as President and CEO from 1986 – 2019 and has been involved in a wide variety of civil rights litigation, including cases against neo-Nazi groups for the violence of their members. He has appeared in the United States Supreme Court, as well as in state courts throughout the country, and has testified many times before Congress on hate group activity in the United States. He served on the Department of Homeland Security’s Countering Violent Extremism Working Group and was a recipient of the FBI Director’s Community Leadership Award.

A Virginia native, Richard received his undergraduate degree from Columbia University and his law degree from the University of Virginia. Prior to joining the Law Center, he was a shareholder in a Washington, D.C., law firm. Today, he lives with his wife, an educator, in Pensacola, Florida.
