ARLINGTON, MA — Residents and employees in Arlington can now apply for the Arlington Police Department's Community Police Academy, a free six-week program that offers a behind-the-scenes look at local law enforcement.
The fall session will run from Oct. 15 through Nov. 19 at the Arlington Police Department on 112 Mystic St. Classes are typically held on Thursday evenings from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the department's Community Room on the second floor and feature a mix of classroom instruction, scenario-based learning and hands-on field activities designed to give participants a better understanding of police work.
The academy is open to anyone age 18 or older who lives or works in Arlington. Applicants are subject to a background check before being accepted into the program.
Participants will learn about a variety of policing topics, including the department's history, the K-9 Unit, crime scene investigation, the 911 emergency communications system, traffic law, restorative justice, domestic violence, cybercrime, identity theft, and patrol ride-alongs.
Applications must be received by 12 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 21, to be considered for the upcoming session. Applications submitted after the deadline will receive priority consideration for the next academy.
Interested participants can complete an application and return it to the Records Department on the second floor of the police station or via email.
The Community Police Academy is one of several community outreach programs offered by the Arlington Police Department. The department also provides services such as child safety seat inspections and the Safewatch program for at-risk residents as part of its efforts to strengthen relationships with the community. Police officials said class size is limited and typically fills quickly.
