Arlington High School Community Mourns Death Of Student: Report

The student had just completed his sophomore year.

ARLINGTON, MA — An Arlington High School student has died, according to a report from Your Arlington.

Ian Sotelo Newhall died this week, Principal Matthew Janger announced on Tuesday. According to a letter he sent out to the school, Newhall's family gave the school permission to share the news with students and staff. Newhall was a rising junior slated to graduate in 2028.

Arlington High School opened its Counseling Suite Tuesday through Thursday to provide support for students, staff and others affected by the loss. The school said counselors, social workers, and members of its mental health team were available, with additional support continuing throughout the summer and when classes resume.

Janger also asked community members not to speculate about the circumstances surrounding Newhall's death or share unverified information online, urging everyone to respect the family's privacy. The school also shared mental health resources, including the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, and said information about ways to honor Newhall's memory will be shared if and when it becomes available. No additional information about his death has been released.
