Arlington Police Officer Retires After Storied Career

ARLINGTON, MA — A longtime police officer who spent 25 years serving the town has retired after a career that included nearly two decades as the department's police prosecutor and evidence officer.

Inspector Gina Bassett retired after 25 years of service with the Arlington Police Department, where she was sworn in as a full-time police officer on June 3, 2001.

For the past 17 years, Bassett served as the department's police prosecutor and evidence officer, acting as the primary liaison between the Arlington Police Department and Cambridge District Court. In that role, she helped coordinate criminal cases and oversaw the management and integrity of evidence used in investigations and prosecutions.

Bassett was recognized as the Arlington Police Department's Officer of the Year in 2017. At the time, department officials credited her professionalism and leadership in implementing a new barcode-based evidence tracking system following renovations to police headquarters, modernizing the department's evidence management process.

Earlier in her career, Bassett also served as an instructor for the department's Rape Aggression Defense program, a free self-defense course offered to women in the community.

The department credited Bassett's professionalism, integrity and dedication with earning the respect of her fellow officers, members of the court system and the Arlington community throughout her career.

"As she begins this exciting new chapter, we extend our heartfelt congratulations and wish Inspector Bassett a retirement filled with happiness, good health, relaxation, and many new adventures," the department said in a statement. "Thank you for your remarkable service, your dedication to the Town of Arlington, and the legacy you are leaving behind."
