Safety Concerns Delay Arlington Park Playground Opening

A third-party certified playground safety inspector identified the concerns after examining the newly installed equipment at this park.

ARLINGTON, MA — The town announced that it has paused work on the Menotomy Rocks Park playground after an independent safety inspection identified concerns with potentially defective equipment components.

The reported issues are expected to delay the playground's reopening by at least several weeks. A third-party certified playground safety inspector identified the concerns after examining the newly installed equipment, according to a Sept. 17 update from Arlington. The town did not specify which components may be defective or provide additional details about the safety concerns. Arlington said it is working with its contractors and the playground equipment manufacturer to resolve the issues before the playground opens.

The latest delay follows a series of schedule changes for the playground and picnic area project. In July, Arlington expected playground equipment installation to be completed by the end of that month, followed by grading, construction of an accessible pathway and installation of a pavilion in August. The playground had been expected to open this fall. The town previously anticipated construction beginning in 2024, followed by projected openings in 2025 and then 2026.

Arlington said resolving the newly identified equipment problems could take several weeks and that a revised project timeline will be released when more information is available. "We share the public's frustration with the delay," the town said, adding that the additional work is necessary to ensure the playground is safe and accessible before it opens.
