Educator in Attleboro Schools, Dr. Martha Nickerson, Dies at 85

Martha L.  Nickerson PhD, 85, of Richardson Avenue, Attleboro, died Wednesday at Sturdy Memorial Hospital.

Dr. Nickerson was born in Attleboro, a daughter of the late Franklin Graham Nickerson Sr. and Martha O. (Logan) Nickerson.

She was a School Teacher and Librarian for the Attleboro School Department for over 40 years, before retiring in 1989.

She received a Doctorate Degree from Columbia University.

She also taught school children for over 10 years overseas in places  such as  Germany, France, England, Japan and Turkey.

Martha  was an Attleboro resident all of her life. She was a member of the Murray Unitarian Universalist Church of Attleboro, a member of the Attleboro Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (D.A.R.) and a member of the Alpha –Theta  Delta Kappa Gamma Society.

She  saved a large Beech Tree in front of her house when the city was going to widen Richardson Avenue. She fought to save the beautiful, big tree and ultimately won.

Martha loved to travel, travel, travel, and was also interested in Genealogy.

She is survived by her cousin Lillian Meyer of Hobe Sound Florida, a niece Gail Campbell of Viera Florida, 4 nephews Franklin Graham Nickerson III of Copake New York, Nathan Nickerson of Northport Florida, Gregory Nickerson of Port Charlotte Florida, Jeffrey Nickerson of Port Charlotte Florida.

She was the sister of the late Franklin Graham Nickerson Jr.

Her funeral service will be held Monday Feb. 28,  2011 at 11:30am in the Foley – Hathaway  Funeral Home, 126 South Main Street, Attleboro, Massachusetts, burial will follow in North Purchase Cemetery , Attleboro, Ma.  Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Calling hours Monday from 10:00am – 11:30am.
