When the Hearth 'n Kettle opened in 1973, Americans were glued to their televisions watching the Watergate Hearings, Tony Orlando’s “Tie a Yellow Ribbon ‘Round The ‘Ole Oak Tree” topped the record charts, the last US soldier left Vietnam and the price of gas was 40 cents a gallon! That very same year, Vincent “V.J.” Catania opened the first Hearth ’n Kettle Restaurant on Cape Cod. His mission: to serve wholesome, made-from-scratch New England cooking, at reasonable prices, in a cozy, comfortable atmosphere. Breakfast was available all day, and hearty comfort food was served at lunch and dinner. Hearth ’n Kettle quickly became a Cape Cod tradition for summer visitors and locals alike. Hearth 'n Kettle Restaurants are located in Weymouth, Plymouth, Orleans, South Yarmouth, Attleboro and Hyannis.
“Much has changed in the world since 1973, and H ’n K has updated and innovated with the times,” explains V.J. Catania's son Bill Catania, President and CEO of the family-owned company. “We now offer items such as Arugula Power Salad, Stir Fry Bowls and Nut-Crusted Salmon alongside traditional favorites like Chicken Pot Pie and Cape Scrod. Many entrées are prepared with all natural, organic, and antibiotic/hormone-free ingredients. Hearth ’n Kettle also offers a large Gluten-free menu and FREE WiFi!
“And yet while times change,” Catania adds, “The things that our customers love the most about us remain the same: breakfast served all day; quality, made-from-scratch cooking; reasonable prices; a warm, friendly greeting and a restaurant you can trust. That's why many guests who came to Hearth ’n Kettle as kids vacationing on the Cape, now bring their own children to H’n K."
In the past 40 years, the company has grown from a single family restaurant to an award-winning collection of restaurants, resorts and spas known as the Catania Hospitality Group. Businesses include six Hearth ’n Kettles (all in MA), the Dan’l Webster Inn & Spa (Sandwich), Cape Codder Resort & Spa (Hyannis), John Carver Inn & Spa (Plymouth), the Grand Cru Wine Bar & Grill (Hyannis) and three Beach Plum Spas/Med-Spas. V.J. Catania instilled his high standards and work ethic in his six children, who have each contributed to the company’s growth and success. In addition to President and CEO Bill Catania, second-generation management includes Steven Catania, Vice President, and Debra Catania, Vice President. Members of the third generation are also actively involved in various aspects of the family business.
To celebrate their 40th Anniversary, the Catania Hospitality Group is offering special promotions during the month of March. These include a “40 Winks” overnight package at all three hotels; Double Points on all purchases made using a “Frequent Guest” rewards card; Bonus gift cards for restaurant guests each Wednesday and drawings for gift cards and a Grand Prize Getaway. They have also launched the “Hearth ’n Kettle and Dan’l Webster Reunion” group on Facebook to encourage past and present employees to connect and share stories and photos of the days when the waitresses wore colonial garb and H’n K was open 24 hours to accommodate the bar rush! As one of the regions largest
employers with 40 years of longevity, the expectation is that this group will grow quickly!
