Creative Sewing Studio Sponsors Community Garden for Students

The Creative Sewing Studio in North Attleboro, MA http://www.thecreativesewingstudio.com , a venue for sewing, art, and discovery, is expanding their outlets for creative expression and love of hands-on activities by underwriting space in the Attleboro Land Trust/City of Attleboro community garden for the summer of 2016.

Any past or present student may avail themselves of this space and enjoy the rewards of gardening by joining The Creative Sewing Studio team. Owner and educator, Mikala Cash and her husband Rodney Campbell, owner of C & C Property Maintenance, are donating all the seedlings and plants needed to launch this project. They are also providing much of the labor to maintain it.

Says Cash, “During our ten years in business, we have grown to know and appreciate our customers. We are very
grateful and I consider so many of them an extension of my family. We thought this sponsorship would be a nice way to spend time together outside of the studio and to give back to those who have supported us, while helping the community. ”

Plants for the garden include flowers chosen specifically for their abundance, beauty and longevity when picked as well as vegetables ranging from yellow beans to multicolored carrots to mesclun mix lettuce. Five types of hearty heirloom tomatoes are the highlight of the garden, selected for their taste, diversity and colorful qualities.

Cash says, “I selected the flowers and veggies the same way I select fabric -- for the color, texture and unique attributes. For example, one of our tomatoes is called ‘Big Rainbow.’ It’s a golden color with huge ribbed shoulders and has red running through the flesh. The vegetables are organic and participants will be able to sample tomatoes that most major stores simply just don’t carry.”

The Studio currently has several participants enrolled in the garden program and is still accepting more people. Mikala sends out bi-weekly e-mail updates to all those involved. Participants meet at the garden as a group once a month to swap knowledge, tips and tricks. To accommodate busy schedules, participants are provided with ‘garden days.’ During these days, participants care for the garden by weeding, watering, pruning and picking. Excess produce will be donated to the Attleboro food pantry.
