HILL-ROBERTS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IN ATTLEBORO, MA FIRST ANNUAL "RACE FOR EDUCATION"

Attleboro, MA, October 23, 2015 – Hill-Roberts Elementary School students are set to kick off the first ever Race for Education on Friday, October 23, 2015.

The walk-a-thon will see hundreds of student walkers circle the field as their are cheered on by their teachers, classmates, family, friends and community officials, as they fulfil their promise to raise funds for technology upgrades, field trips and enrichment programs for their school. Mayor Kevin Dumas will start the race with the Kindergarten and First Grade students at 9:00AM sharp, and he will also participate in a few laps with the students. During the walk, students will also participate in some fun activities to keep them excited about their goal and help them complete their hour.

About the Race for Education
The Race for Education is a walk-a-thon fundraising program developed by a former elementary school principal. Funds are raised for the school via direct mail. Hill-Roberts students were asked to bring in completed address labels with their friends’ and family’s addresses so sponsorship letters could be mailed directly to their homes. These potential sponsors were mailed a letter requesting a donation on behalf of the student. The students receive incentive prizes for returning the mailing labels. The walk-a-thon takes place on the school grounds, where the students walk with their peers and teachers in a designated area for one hour. They will enjoy music and fun activities during the walk.

“We are excited to look at fundraising in a different way this year, and this race provided us the opportunity to tie into our instructional day. This event also allows our older students to write letters to their family members as part of their ELA classes; while every student also worked in their Physical Education classes to prepare physically by learning dances and stretches that are being incorporated into the race,” said Hill-Roberts Principal, Scott Johnson.

The race starts at 9:00AM sharp with the Kindergarten and 1st grades. Students in 2nd and 3rd grades will begin their walk at 10:00AM, followed by the 4th graders at 11:00AM. Each walking session will last for an hour. Drinks will be provided along the route. Once the students have completed their hour, they will be rewarded with some refreshments. Family and friends will also be invited to join their student(s) for the last 15 mins of their walks to encourage them to finish strong and finish together!

“We are very excited for our first Race for Education walk-a-thon! The students, staff, parents and volunteers have been working hard to make this a great success. We are looking forward to a fun day of walking and raising money for Hill-Roberts!” said Race for Education co-chairs, Jillian Weber and Amy Riendeau.

The committee for the Race for Education hopes that this walk-a-thon will become a tradition for Hill-Roberts and it will be a fundraiser that will be celebrated for years to come.
