Attleboro Softball Falls to Mansfield in Pitching Duel

Bombardier Hannah Smith strikes out eight.

In a game dominated by pitching, the Mansfield Hornets got the hits they needed at exactly the right time against the Attleboro Blue Bombardiers. Despite eight strikeouts by Attleboro pitcher Hannah Smith, Mansfield beat the Bombardiers 3-2 in eight innings.

Attleboro's record drops to 7-7 overall and 7-6 in Hockomock League play. 

With two on and two out in the bottom of the third inning, the Hornets took a 1-0 lead after Lauren Boen's two-out single brought Erin Glavin home and advanced Moriah Baker to third base. The Bombardiers were able to stop a potential rally with a strike out by Taylor Ryan.

Attleboro responded quickly in the top of the forth inning when Keely Viau got on second with a lead-off double to start the inning. One batter later, Hannah Smith's single brought Viau home to tie the game 1-1.

With two on and no outs, the Hornets caught a break when Mikayla Harnois' bunt fell into Glavin's glove for the out and the start of a 5-3 double play.

Keeping the Bombardiers off the bases, Mansfield pitcher Maddie Letendre was able to strike out seven and let up only two hits after the run to help force extra innings.

In the additional frame, Attleboro was able to strike on a fielder's choice by Viauto to take a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the eight inning.

With the Hornets down to their final three outs, Lauren Boen was able to reach first on a bunt while advancing Moriah Baker to third base. A double by Taylor Ryan with no outs brought in Boen and Baker as the Hornets picked up their eighth win of the season.

Attleboro returns to action May 11 against Bishop Feehan.
