Grammy-nominated guitarist and singer Michael Daves performs Live at The Red Room at Cafe 939 / 8PM / All Ages / $10 adv / $20 dos

Grammy-nominated guitarist and singer Michael Daves performs in support of his recently released two-disc set, Orchids and Violence (Nonesuch Records). Joining him are banjoist Noam Pikelny (Punch Brothers) and fiddler Brittany Haas (Crooked Still, Haas Kowert Tice). On May 6, Nonesuch released Violence and Orchids, the vinyl edition of Orchids and Violence. This one-disc mashup interweaves the bluegrass and electric versions of five songs from the double album, presenting side-by-side comparisons of the two versions of each song.
Pikelny and Haas recorded with Daves on disc one of Orchids and Violence, along with Sarah Jarosz, Mike Bub, and special guests including Tony Trischka. On disc two, Daves recorded the identical track list of 12 mostly traditional bluegrass songs but in a raw, electric reinterpretation, playing most of the instruments himself. The New York Times calls it "a roots-music master class, a brilliant example of old modes reinhabited with flair....To his credit, it can be hard to pick which version of a tune is best."
Hailed by the Chicago Tribune as the “pros’ top banjo picker,” Pikelny was recently awarded the International Bluegrass Music Association’s banjo player of the year and album of the year awards. Haas recently toured and recorded with the Dave Rawlings Machine and is regarded as one of the most influential fiddlers of her generation.
