The Ruby Door Reopens!

On July 8, 2010, The Ruby Door located at 15 Charles Street, was shuttered due to a four alarm electrical fire originating in the basement of the 17 Charles Street home of Deluca’s Market.  Although firefighters contained the fire, extensive electrical, water and smoke damage forced several businesses and apartment dwellers to vacate including that of The Ruby Door.

“My initial reaction was ‘what am I going to do now.’ I had poured my heart and soul into the shop and I felt it could all go up in smoke, literally! But as it turns out, the fire has had a silver lining.  It has allowed me to reinvent, reestablish and rejuvenate The Ruby Door” said owner, Tracey Weiss.

Weiss used her time away from the shop to grow her online business, www.therubydoor.com, by reengineering the website and expanding her presence on Facebook.  Weiss also invested her energy into a sister business that she runs with her husband, Zenny Chareas, called Peter and Grove. Peter and Grove is primarily focused on home décor, custom designed from vintage and salvage materials.  “Peter and Grove is a natural extension of my jewelry design business. I use vintage influences and components in my designs for both business and I often find that I can source vintage jewelry and home decor in the same places. I absolutely love breathing new life into older items,” explained Weiss.

The Ruby Door carries Weiss’ personally designed jewelry line, Miller Grove Designs, as well as other locally sourced jewelry, art and home goods.  The shop opened in 2004 and by the time the shop closed a year ago July, it had garnered a loyal following.  While the shop offers high-end goods and made-to-order items such as engagement and wedding rings, it also recognizes that there is a need for quality products at reasonable prices and prices can range from a $45 pair of vintage gumdrop colored earrings to a $4,575 for an 18k white gold and diamond ring with an antique champagne diamond as the center stone.

Weiss is excited to be back in her bricks-and-mortar shop, mainly because she missed the daily interaction with her clientele and the ability to physically display and showcase her goods.
