Bonnie Hayes Named Chair of Berklee’s Songwriting Department

Bonnie Hayes, a woman with a lifetime of experience as a songwriter, performer, and educator, has been named chair of Berklee’s Songwriting Department.

Throughout her career, Hayes has written songs for many artists including Bonnie Raitt, Cher, Bette Midler, David Crosby, Robert Cray, Adam Ant, and Booker T and the MGs. In addition, she has produced more than 40 records. Hayes also toured as a side musician with Billy Idol and Cris Williamson.

When it comes to education, Hayes designed and implemented the youth program for the Blue Bear School of Music in San Francisco. She taught piano, guitar, theory, composition, and, of course, songwriting to thousands of students around the country.

As the chair of the Songwriting Department, Hayes hopes to “streamline, modernize, and energize the curriculum with the goal of giving students the tools and support for viable careers in the current and future music industry.” She also wants to help the teachers at Berklee create more engaging and innovative programs.

The prior chair of the department, Jack Perricone, held the position for 26 years and is very pleased to have Hayes take over as chair of the Songwriting Department as he had admired her work as a songwriter before meeting her.
