Boston Marathon Bomber's Friend Gets 72 Months in Prison

U.S. Attorney: Dias Kadyrbayev obstructed justice by disposing of evidence after the incident at the request of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office is reporting that Dias Kadyrbayev, a college classmate and friend of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, the convicted Boston Marathon Bomber, has been sentenced to 72 months in prison today for his role in hiding evidence in the case.

Kadyrbayev, a Kazakhstan national, was living in New Bedford at the time of the incident on a student visa while attending U-Mass/Dartmouth. Tsarnaev texted him and requested that he empty out evidence at their apartment and dispose of it. Kadyrbayev put some of the items, including a backpack, in a garbage bag and placed it in the dumpster outside the apartment, with Tazhayakov’s knowledge and approval.

Robel Phillipos of Cambridge, another friend of Tsarnaev, was found guilty of making false statements during the terrorism investigation in October 2014.
