In his earliest work, he sought to combine the lush harmonies of Wagner with the masterful craftsmanship of Brahms, beginning a lifelong journey to create, in the words of his student Leon Kirchner, “a personal cosmos, a verdant world in continuity with tradition.'' The program includes Brahms’ Piano Quartet No. 1 in g minor, Op. 25; Wagner’s Wesendonk Lieder for soprano & piano; Schoenberg’s rarely-heard 1905 Ein Stelldichein for oboe, clarinet, violin, cello, & piano; Alban Berg’s Four Pieces for clarinet & piano; and Leon Kirchner’s Duo II for violin & piano.
