WHAT:  Dîner en Blanc marks the world’s first viral event, a très chic picnic imported from Paris and now taking hold in outdoor public spaces in 20 cities across 5 continents in 2012. Taking the pop up concept to a refined and mysterious level, these romantic outdoor Epicurean Feasts are organized entirely via social media, attended annually by as many as 10,000 people in cities around the world. For Boston’s first Dîner en Blanc, the guest list will be limited to 1000 people for the as-yet-to-be-disclosed location.

Part mystery, part magic, part flash feast, part je ne sais quoi, the day of the event unfolds the same in every city: the site is revealed at the last-minute to preserve spontaneity and secrecy. Guests are directed to meet in groups of between 20-40 at rallying points where organizers will escort them by foot or subway to the nearby location.  All are asked to dress in elegant white, bring their own epicurean feasts, tables, chairs, glasses, silver and white napery.  The mass of secret picnickers come together for a “chic picnic” in a public space. Over the course of the evening, the diners will celebrate and dine amid live music, dancing, complete with music and festive white balloons. When it is time to leave, guests will pack their crystal, dinnerware and tables, gather all their debris and head into the night, no sign of their elegant revelry left behind.

About Dîner en Blanc:

Launched with just a handful of friends over 20 years ago, Paris’ Dîner en Blanc now assembles nearly 15,000 people each year. It began humbly in 1988. That year, François Pasquier, now 68, returned to Paris after a few years abroad and held a dinner party to reconnect with friends. So many wanted to come that he asked them to convene at the Bois de Boulogne and to dress in white, so they could find each other. The French capital’s most prestigious sites have played host to Diner En Blanc, most recently in both the Cour Carrée of the Louvre and in the back courtyard of Notre Dame Cathedral. For its U.S. debut last year, more than 30,000 New Yorkers signed up for a coveted spot on the 1000-person guest list and the chance to attend a magical dinner party at Battery Park.
