
The Boston Classical Guitar Society (BCGS) presents Festival 21, a daylong celebration of new music for the guitar. The day's events begin with an open rehearsal of a new work from Anthony Paul De Ritis to be performed by the Festival 21 Guitar Orchestra under Scott Borg in the evening concert. Also scheduled are a technique workshop by Belgian guitar virtuoso Jerome Mouffe, a Conservatories Showcase featuring talented performers selected by area college guitar faculty, an Ensembles Concert involving guitar groups from area schools and colleges, and a Members Recital highlighting the musical pursuits of the BCGS community.
The 2012 edition of Festival 21 will be the most interactive yet, bringing together the entire community in celebration of the present and future of our instrument. The Festival 21 schedule includes:
• 9 am Registration & Open Orchestra Rehearsal
• 10 am Conservatories Concert featuring talented young guitarists from NEC, Berklee, Boston Conservatory, Longy & Rhode Island University
• 11 am Technique Workshop with Jerome Mouffe
• 1:30 pm Members' Concert new solo works
• 2:30 pm Coffee Break
• 3 pm Ensembles Concert
A Festival 21 pass covers the entire day's events plus the evening concert featuring the acclaimed classical guitarist David Leisner performing works of Del Tredici, Britten, Leisner and Carrillo. Joining Leisner will be the combined Festival 21 guitar orchestras (Scott Borg, director) premiering a newly commissioned work by Anthony Paul De Ritis. De Ritis is cusrrently Professor and Chair of the Music Department at Northeastern University in Boston. He has received performances nationally and internationally, including at the Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall and UNESCO headquarters in Paris, where his Melody for Peace was premiered by the Prague Philharmonic.
The Boston Classical Guitar Society is a nonprofit organization that advocates for the classical guitar through performance, education, and community building. Since its founding in 1977, the BCGS has presented leading guitarists in concerts and masterclasses while frequently supporting local competitions, ensembles, and festivals including Festival 21 and Boston GuitarFest.
