Originating in France, parkour is the art of traversing landscapes and navigating obstacles in the most efficient way possible, using only ones body and the surrounding environment, through a series of running, jumping, climbing, scaling, vaulting and rolling techniques. An ancient art, parkour’s two primary characteristics of efficiency and speed can be traced back to the Stone Age when man’s survival depended on his ability to hunt, chase and move freely, or as the unofficial motto states, être et durer, "to be and to last.”

While parkour can be practiced anywhere, Boston’s urban landscape is a perfect setting for this introductory class on Saturday, August 13th, 2011. In “Parkour 101,” experts from New England England Parkour, the area’s premier parkour organization, will give students a crash course in parkour, including the fundamentals of the sport as well as tips on how to develop ones spatial awareness for safe and effective training. Afterwards, “traceurs” (Parisian slang for parkour participants, and roughly translated to mean “to move quickly) will step out into the city for a review of the basic techniques followed by a short conditioning session.
After this one-session workshop, students will have the opportunity to work on their traversing skills at the Boston Rock Gym with a free day—pass and equipment rental to the area’s leading indoor rock gym!
