May 7, 2012 marks 200 years since Robert Browning's birth. To commemorate this bicentennial, Dr. Vincent F. Petronella, Professor Emeritus at UMass Boston and President Emeritus of the Boston Browning Society, speaks on "The Value of Endurance in the Poetry of the Brownings” in conjunction with the library's ongoing exhibition,Robert Browning at 200: His Enduring Importance.
Robert Browning is often associated with poems that express the value of endurance in our lives. To confront life’s many challenges with an assertive sense of daring so that physical and spiritual goals are achieved is central to much of the poetry of Robert Browning and that of his soul-mate, Elizabeth Barrett Browning. A number of poems by both poets will be cited to demonstrate how the poetry of the Brownings illuminates the value of human endurance in stress-ridden contexts.
