The Emilia-Romagna Region
Emilia-Romagna, located in Northern Italy and consisting of nine provinces, is one of the country's most popular cultural and tourist centers. Home to more than 4 million people and one of the most beautiful areas of Italy, Emilia-Romagna is known for its fine wines and exceptional pasta creations. In addition to being the birthplace of renowned composer Giuseppe Verdi, Emilia-Romagna is home to Bologna University (one of the first universities in the world), as well as such luxury automobile companies as Ferrari, Lomborghini and Maserati.
The name Emilia is derived from the Roman road connecting Rome to Northern Italy, while Romagna is derived from the Eastern Roman Empire. The region also contains the tiny republic of San Marino, founded in 301 A.D. and ranking as the most ancient republic in Europe.
