No dancing candlesticks here! This 2014 adaptation of Beauty and the Beast follows the original, darker fairy tale to create an “incredible and improbable love story” (EcranLarge). After the youngest daughter (Seydoux) of a merchant who has fallen on hard times offers herself to the mysterious Beast (Cassel) to whom her father has become indebted, she goes to live in his castle and discovers the mysterious enchantment that keeps him prisoner. Director Christophe Gans (Brotherhood of the wolves) offers an opulent, lavish visual experience that adheres more closely to the original, darker fairytale. Gans’ interpretation also includes a unique backstory for the Beast. The film has received critical praise for its visual style and won the César Award for Best Production Design in 2014.
