About the Boston Literary District

Boston enjoys the distinction of becoming the first city in the country to host an official Literary Cultural District, an area running roughly from the Boston Public Library in Copley Square through the Boston Public Garden and Beacon Hill to what was once the Globe Corner Bookstore. Not only does “the Hub” have an unparalleled literary heritage-- with local writers ranging from enslaved poet Phillis Wheatley to Henry David Thoreau, Khalil Gibran and Sylvia Plath--it also boasts an unparalleled literary present, with institutions like GrubStreet, the Boston Book Festival, and Emerson College showcasing the writers of today and nurturing the writers of tomorrow. The mission of the Boston Literary District is to raise the visibility of Boston’s rich history and vibrant present-day scene through collaborative public programs and partnerships.
