Midnight Snack / Ellen Siberian-Tiger / Mal Devisa

Midnight Snack, Ellen Siberian-Tiger, & Mal Devisa are performing at Cafe 939 on Fri, 9/11 at 8pm. 939 Boylston Street, Boston, MA

Midnight Snack is the musical brainchild of brothers John and Mike Johnson. They started the project in 2009 in rural Harwinton, Connecticut, and the next year moved to Boston to study at Berklee, where they started playing their songs with several of their closest friends. The band now consists of John on vocals and drums, Mike on guitar and keyboards, Katie Richter on vocals and trumpet, Peter Brownlee on bass, and Zack Kardon on guitar. Their sound is a blend of old-school psychedelic rock and funk with new-school art rock.

Ellen Siberian-Tiger combines the sounds of fingerpicking folk music with the distorted effects of the electric guitar. Her primary influences are the Dodos and St. Vincent. She is also heavily inspired by literature, people, and Pennsylvania, where she grew up.

Mal Devisa is a project started by 18-year-old Deja Carr that combines improvisational music with jazz, folk, indie, hip-hop, punk, and many other genres. The music defies genre in the most DIY ways imaginable. Devisa recently finished a 50 show tour to celebrate her 18th birthday as well as made features in beloved spaces such as NPR and Afropunk. Her lyrics are by turns venomous and sweet, and the hype surrounding her music indicates that she won’t be stopping any time soon.\
