Stay in Shape Through the Winter with the Niketown Running Club

When the weather turns nasty, logging miles with other runners may be just the motivation you need.

When the brutal Boston winter hits, staying in shape can take a back seat to staying inside. But the solution could be as simple as joining a running club.

The endorphin rush, the weight loss effect, and the cardiovascular benefits can be found at the Running Club, which meets every Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at Nike's flagship store on 200 Newbury Street.

"We have a core group of about 20 runners," said Nikki Higgins, club organizer and Niketown employee. "Most of them are in their early-mid 20's, but the oldest member is in his 60's so there's a wide range."

Beginners to hardcore athletes don't let Mother Nature get in the way. On a recent night a strong wind blew and cold rain poured down, making running a less-than-desirable option. But about 15 people still showed up.

"The amount varies," Higgins said. "We get the biggest crowd in the summer, about 80 people. But people still come when it rains."

On these not so pleasant evenings, being a part of the group provides extra motivation. Having people to run with makes it easier to get out on a nasty night.

Runners can ch0ose a 3.5 mile, 5.5 mile, or 8.5 mile loop. But the group does more than make strides. There's a friendly vibe, camaraderie, and a strong social aspect, where runners can make friends and feel like their activity has more purpose than just sweating.

Being a part of Niketown also has some perks. Like a monthly raffle for a free pair of shoes.

"We get all sorts of promotions here," Higgins said. "There's always unlimited Luna bars and other companies sometimes promote their products, like Mix1. And sometimes there's footwear trials of our [Nike] products, so the runners get to try the shoes out before anyone else."
