Talk - The Lost Sketchbooks: A Young Artist in the Great War

Discover the story of an American artist fighting in France during WWI.Tue May 26 6:30-8:30 PM The French Cultural Center, 53 Marlborough St

Event Description

As Memorial Day approaches and we remember the sacrifices of soldiers across history and across the world, the French Cultural Center is honored to offer an intimate look into the life of an American soldier in WW1. Edward Shenton was a renowned illustrator of magazines and books, but while still a young man, he joined the army. As an art student, he had drawn in sketchbooks every day and he continued this habit during training camp and throughout his tour in France. He saw combat on the Marne, the Vesle and in the Argonne. When he returned to the U.S. he put his wartime artwork away, to gather dust for almost a century.

On May 26th, we will welcome Mr. Rex Passion to discuss the amazing discovery of these lost sketches, and his authorial quest to bring Shenton’s work to life again. Although The Lost Sketchbooks: A Young Artist in The Great War tells Ed Shenton’s story through words, his experiences are conveyed most intimately through his extraordinary drawings.

Rex Passion has put himself in the path of adventure most of his life. Whether it was exploring remote islands where early nineteenth century sailors slaughtered seals or crawling through guano-filled caves in search of pre-Colombian art, Rex has always looked for the story behind the adventure. The Lost Sketchbooks: A Young Artist in The Great War is his first book.
